A cara do folk atual: Iron & Wine

Iron & Wine é o nome artístico utilizado pelo cantor e compositor de folk-rock Sam Beam (um estudante de cinema da universidade da Florida que costumava escrever canções nas horas vagas). Beam lançou seu primeiro álbum em 2002 , "The Creek Drank the Cradle"e assim começou a carreira que hoje é uma das mais interessantes que tenho ouvido nos últimos tempos. No ano seguinte lançou “The Sea & The Rhythm”, um EP que trazia outras gravações caseiras que eram na mesma linha do álbum de estréia. O segundo álbum de Beam, “Our Endless Numbered Days”, de 2004, é um albúm simplesmente fantástico, foi gravado em estúdio profissional, modificando radicalmente a qualidade que antes era de um estúdio caseiro. O foco ainda estava no som acústico, na levada calma e tocante, mas acabou entrando outros membros na banda, e assim o som adquiriu complementos mais "diversificados".
Em 2005, Beam lançou um EP com o nome de “Woman King”, que amplia ainda mais a diversidade de sons (incluindo guitarras). Cada música inclui uma figura espiritual com um embasamento bíblico, apesar de Beam se declarar agnóstico.
Depois de compor tantas obras primas como On Your Wings, Naked As We Came, Cinder and Smoke,ele se superou com o “The Shepherds Dog”,um album simplesmente incrivel,com 12 faixas sendo uma melhor que a outra.
San Beam escreve, toca, grava e produz cada uma das suas músicas em seu próprio estúdio independente. O som dele (que inclui violão, banjo e outros instrumentos) foi comparado com trabalhos de Nick Drake, Simon and Garfunkel, Neil Young, Belle & Sebastian,Elliott Smith e Ralph Stanley. Sua "linhagem" é classificada como country alternativo, folk progresivo e indie folk. Com uma levada folk diferente de qualquer outra, ele conquistou seu publico alternativo rapidamente e fielmente. Para quem ainda não conhece, aqui vai a discografia desse grande gênio do folk-rock atual. Recomendo: É um som ideal para ouvir em dias chuvosos acompanhado de um bom café e cigarros, de repente até uma companhia pessoal.
